MY REFLECTION
After closing Seldom Seen, my shop in San Francisco, I searched for my next dream. I got clear on my values and what they meant to me. I wrote a personal mission statement, gave myself permission to be a Manifesting Generator (more on human design in another newsletter!), and made it a goal to be more and do less.
And to be honest, I had no idea how to be more and do less until recently.
About six months ago, I didn’t know it then but I was feeling off, unfulfilled, and stuck, even though I was doing work that was aligned with my values. I poured that energy into planning my 40th birthday party in June. I brought friends together, worked with the restaurant on the F&B menu and decor, created the vision for a special party favor, and curated every little detail from the birthday candles to my outfit with intention and love. Come July, I experienced post-event/vacation blues, fell back into work, and was again not feeling like me. Fast forward to the beginning of September and I noticed that I was repeating this unhealthy cycle. I sat in discomfort, patiently waited for wisdom, and listened. I asked myself these questions:
What’s missing?
When have I been in action without trying to be?
What am I doing when I show up as my best self?
My answers showed me that I was looking for ways to be free and do creative things. Specifically, I wanted to find an outlet to practice creative freedom. This led me to re-launch Tash’s Corner here on Substack.
To me, practicing creative freedom means:
I’m taking risks.
I’m having fun and playing.
I’m acting on my own terms. I’m doing what means most to me and being authentically me regardless of what others may think.
I’m trusting myself.
I’m learning how to meet my own expectations, while letting go of the expectation of others.
I hope my story inspires you to define what being more and doing less means to you. And if I can be of any support, you know where to find me now!
xx Tash
MY CHECKLIST
Seldom Seen Edition
For nostalgia’s sake and because I’m writing this during NYFW, this month’s checklist is going to feature some of the brands we used to carry at Seldom Seen. You’ll also get a peak into what my life looks like here in CO!
A men’s and women’s clothing brand from Spain that would have fit right in with Seldom Seen. I’m excited to report back next month after trying on the assortment at a local shop here in Denver.
Midori A5 Notebook Simple Japanese naked journals that come in different sizes and paper options. I’ve tried grid and blank, but always feel the best journaling with lines.
Candles to celebrate the big and small life moments. I chose the mossy ‘Green Tea’ color ones for my birthday and they made making a birthday wish just a little more amazing.
Sneakers and Wood Wood were a big part of Seldom Seen’s identity. Wood Wood just released a collaboration on a Reebok Classic a week ago and it’s simply perfect.
Scalp massager. Not sure how Zac and I ever lived without one. Ours is from Amazon but I’ll be buying this one next.
We never NOT had a white oversized shirt at Seldom Seen. Though I still live in this Elma Shirt by HOPE, I needed one with more shape and sleeve variation but still in a lightweight cotton.
Speaking of HOPE, their AW22 is always consistent with their neutral color palette and timeless silhouettes and I’ve always admired how their line is unisex. Key essentials that I know we would have bought for Seldom Seen: quilted jacket, cable sweater, knit cardigan, and wool coat.
Minimalist skincare. I’m getting my skin ready for CO winter and always finding ways to be more efficient so was sold on this duo. It comes with a 3-in-1 Toner, Serum, Moisturizer and the cream gives my skin an extra glowy boost.
I was recently asked about where to find gold chains. I gravitate towards vintage so here’s two IG accounts where I found my figaro and curb chains.
These colorful turkish towels are fun for the beach and/or home. I had the opportunity to work with the brand’s cofounder and creative director on a custom beach towel and he’s incredibly talented and kind.
With the recent heat wave and now that I live in a city with a real summer, tank tops are just as important as t-shirts. I still live in my BySigne sheer tees so was excited to see that they expanded their Essentials Collection. I love their baby rib fabric and have this tank in multiple colors. Love it styled with a sweater around my neck or under a blazer.
Our showers became a spa experience after Zac and I started using these yummy smelling steamers and mist. I partnered with Christina and Sha, a wife and husband team, on custom soaps and quickly saw how their authenticity and love for one another goes into their brand.
Here’s a Korean brand that celebrates clean and organic wardrobe staples. It was hard to pick, but here’s a few favorites from their AW22 collection. In women’s, this cropped leather jacket, high-rise straight leg denim, shirring cropped cardigan, and ribbed high neck zip-up. In men’s, this corduroy shirt, pullover knit sweater, insulated coat with shearling collar, and wide tapered denim.
Zac recently took me to the mountains and packed an incredible lunch - think charcuterie board appetizer followed by a tuna sandwich and three types of salads. Not only was it delicious, but I was impressed by his tabletop. He brought everything in these fun, sustainable, and reusable dishware and I’m certain it made the food taste even better!
New favorite pair of denim that I can’t take off and surprisingly not vintage.
When I owned Seldom Seen, it was impossible to keep a manicure. Though I got used to seeing my nails naturally and noticed that they were healthier, I wish they had a shine to them. So when I came across this dry gloss manicure kit, my prayers were answered.
Zac naturally gravitates towards Japanese design and loves Goldwin’s tapered pants, compact jacket, and hats.
Zac and I would like to get up to the mountains at least a couple of more times this Fall before Winter hits. I’m still wearing my Timbs from high school, but when it’s time to upgrade, these are at the top of my list.
And to complete this mountain-girl outfit, The Great x Eddie Bauer collection just went on sale and I’m gonna transition what I bought into Fall. I’ve been wearing the black check zip pullover, sling pack, and hiking jacket with the ditsy floral print.
Because an email will never replace a handwritten card
I’m already starting to live in this sweater that I bought last Fall so I’m grateful that it now comes in two new seasonal colors.
I had a lot of fun putting this first checklist together so I hope you learned something new and found some inspiration.
Thank you for your time and support. Being that it’s Autumn Equinox, I leave you with this quote.
When you ask for growth and abundance, don’t be surprised when you start shedding the people, places, and things that don’t align with what you’re asking for. - Alex Elle
Love your checklist and your reflection, Tash! We love hearing what you've been up to.
